Along the Atlantic Coast (monochrome)

2020

I am not sure what led me to make these paintings. I did not see them coming. I am not sure words can even come close to expressing the rationale, or need to make them when I did in early July. But I know I had to make them, and that by going through the painting process, in painting’s own unique time, something was purged and something let go of, and in by letting go, a new perspective on life was reached. The whole emotional journey was one motivated by instinct. I felt a lot of empathy for the mediums and materials. Painted over several days in the elements, starting with blackening out 6 canvases with oil paint and ink, from dawn to dusk, through rain and sun, I came through the paintings using only white paint. Along the journey painting, found objects were brought into the painting. I am not sure why, but I was simply drawn to their animistic characteristics, the curiosity to make something new, to reach out and touch the world. We got through it.
